When Consent Is Sin

Wayne Jackson wrote this short piece which appeared in the August 1985 edition of the "Christian Courier", published by the Church of Christ in Stockton, California.

When vicious Jews stoned Stephen to death (Acts 7:58) Luke carefully records: "And Saul was consenting unto his death" (8:1), a fact which was later acknowledged by Paul himself (22:20). The word rendered "consent" derives from a Greek term which can mean to agree with, approve of, consent to or sympathize with. Though Saul did not throw a stone, he was clearly implicated in Stephen's death by his acquiescence.

In a blistering rebuke of ancient paganism, Paul, now an apostle of Christ, lays bare the gross conduct of first century society. He catalogues their vile sins and affirms that those who practice such things are worthy of death (Romans 1:29). Moreover, the criminal activity of these ancients is compounded by the fact that they "consent" with such atrocious behavior in others. Clearly, from the biblical viewpoint consent with wrong doing is sinful.

There are of course, many applications of this principle. For example, one thinks of the many politicians (and even theologians) who will contend that they are "personally" opposed to the bloody practice of abortion. They remind us however, that they feel obligated to "defend the right" of women to have "free choice" in determining whether or not to terminate the lives of these unborn human beings. No one has the right to sympathize with wrong!

Then there are those who champion the "rights" of the Sodomite community. Oh they are quick to inform you that they are not one of "them". They do fell however, that "Gay Rights" (such as teaching our children in the public school systems) must be defended. Such consent of this filthy life style is utterly reprehensible.

Remember this truth. One does not have to personally engage in immorality or teach a false philosophy to be condemned by God. He merely needs to approve of, consent to, defend or sympathize with such conduct or teaching to be equally implicated in the evil. You are what you lend your influence and support to.
